Natural Radiance (book & CD) by Lama Surya Das

"One moment of total awareness is one moment of perfect enlightenment." This is the ultimate insight of Dzogchen, or "the Great Perfection," the pinnacle teaching of Tibetan Buddhism. With his previous bestselling books, including Awakening the Buddha Within (Broadway, 1997), American-born Tibetan Buddhist teacher Lama Surya Das has taught millions about the innate wakefulness and liberation that can be our natural ways of being. Now, with Natural Radiance, he offers his first complete daily practice program for the personal experience of the "swift and direct path" of Dzogchen. Dzogchen affirms that we are all Buddhas by nature--infinitely open, luminous, compassionate, wise, and free. This profound realization, say the teachings, cannot be understood intellectually or studied mentally, but it can be passed from teacher to student through oral transmission.

How to Meditate with Pema Chodron

When it comes to meditation, Pema Chodron is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost teachers. Yet she's never offered an introductory course on audio --until now. On How to Meditate with Pema Chodron, the American-born Tibetan Buddhist nun and bestselling author presents her first complete spoken-word course for those new to meditation.

Through five CDs of traditional insights and her personal guidance in 12 sitting sessions, Pema Chodron will help you honestly meet and compassionately relate with your mind as you explore:

  • The basics of mindfulness awareness practice, from proper posture to learning to settle to breathing and relaxation

  • Gentleness, patience, and humor --three ingredients for a well-balanced practice.

  • Shamatha (or calm abiding), the art of stabilizing the mind to remain present with whatever arises

  • Thoughts and emotions as "sheer delight" --instead of obstacles --in meditation

"From my own experience and from listening to many people over the years. I've tried to offer here what I feel are the essential points of meditation," explains Pema Chodron. Now this beloved voice shares with you her accessible approach --simple and down-to-earth while informed by the highest traditions of Tibetan Buddhism --on How to Mediate with Pema Chodron.

Radiant Mind: Awakening Unconditioned Awareness

Whether it is called enlighten-ment, pure awareness, or the "unconditioned mind," there exists an awakened state of pure liberation that is at the heart of every contemplative tradition. Yet, according to Peter Fenner, this experience of boundless consciousness does not have to exist separately from our day-to-day, "condi-tioned" existence. Rather, we can learn to exist as unique individuals at the same time as we rest in a unified expanse of oneness with all existence--in a state he calls "Radiant Mind."

Kuan Yin: Accessing the Power of the Divine Feminine

Kuan Yin is revered by millions across spiritual traditions. A female bodhisattva (one who is fully devoted to the enlighten-ment of others), she stood at the gates of Nirvana ready to enter. But when she heard the cries of suffering in the world, she chose to remain in the human realm until the last sentient being was freed from pain. In Kuan Yin, author and devotee Daniela Schenker offers readers an exquisite book of full-color photographs and illustrations, along with invocations, meditations, and visualizations to summon the healing energy of this goddess of compassion and liberation.

Great Heart Way

In their book, experienced practitioners Gerry Shishin Wick and Ilia Shinko Perez have drawn from a wide array of disciplines to create the Great Heart Method. This method uses meditation as an effective means of identifying and working through mental blockages. The book focuses on restoring a heart-mind connection; compassionately healing one's wounded inner self, and fully experiencing difficult emotions with non-judgmental awareness in order to fully transform them. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to looks at feelings and emotions from a Buddhist perspective.

Big Mind, Big Heart

This book presents a highly original and accessible pathway to self-discovery and personal liberation. Big Mind employs a Jungian voice dialogue technique that enables people to step out of limited self-concepts into awareness of their many different sub-selves (emotions/mental states). In addition to exploration of the more familiar sub-voices like anger and fear, Zen Master Dennis Genpo Merzel uses this technique to help people access the ever-present Big Mind/Big Heart awareness - the clear, "just being" awareness and the unconditional compassion that we all can experience.

Instructions to the Cook

Based on a 13th-century Japanese manual of the same title, this guide to modern-day Zen practice also details the history of Glassman's work in the world. An abbot of Zen communities in New York City and Los Angeles, Glassman is also the founder of the Greyston Mandala, a network that includes a commercial bakery, apartments for the homeless and other not-for-profit community development projects in Yonkers, a suburb of New York City. In Zen Buddhist tradition, the preparation of a meal is used as a metaphor for leading a meaningful life. Glassman and Fields (coauthor of Chop Wood, Carry Water) detail the five main "courses" of life: spirituality, study, livelihood, social action, and relationship and community. Most widely recognized of the Greyston ventures is the successful bakery. Besides being a teacher of Zen and a noted social activist, Glassman is a pragmatic businessman. His description of how he and others who work with and for the jobless and homeless of Yonkers dealt with government agencies, banks, suspicious residents and the vagaries of the marketplace will satisfy the appetites of readers whose interest is as much in business practice as in Zen practice.

Worlds of Power, Words of Light

This book is a wonderful account of the author's journey into the world of enlightenment. The story literally carries you with her. Filled with Buddhist Magic and Light, this book has my highest recommendation! Fans of books like "Surfing the Himalayas" "Snowboarding to Nirvana" by Frederick Lenz a will definitely enjoy this book. It was interesting to get a female's perspective on taking the first steps on the Pathway to Liberation. Very insightful getting the inside track on what it's like being a student of an advanced spiritual teacher.

Awakening into Oneness: The Power of Blessing in the Evolution of Consciousness

A fascinating discovery in southern India has caught the attention of spiritual teachers from every tradition, leaders from around the world, and millions more. It is the phenomenon called the Oneness Blessing (also known as "deeksha" in the East), a powerful transfer of energy believed to elicit the realization of unitive consciousness.

Echoes of Eternity - The Forgotten Goddess

I found this band while I was searching for new music at the iMusic store. This is a new band from Canada, and they have a very similar sound to Rush. In addition, the female vocals are quite captivating. It is an interesting album to this to, and I do recommend it if you like mystical-rock on the heavy metal side. However, I would not recommend it for your meditation practice.

If you want a good and mellow CD for your meditation practice, then I would recommend, Winds of Devotion by Nawang Khechog & R. Carlos Nakai. The healing Music of two great traditions-from two world-renowned master flutists from opposite sides of the world, two rich traditions in healing music meet in one beautiful album: Winds of Devotion. Acclaimed Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai and Tibetan Flute virtuoso Nawang Khechog come together in a cross-continental prayer for compassion, wisdom, healing, and universal love. These Grammy nominated artists offer you four peaceful and uplifting compositions of healing music that express their shared reverence for the divine spirit.

Flow of Grace

Flow of Grace by Krishna Das is a remarkable accomplishment. In this double CD, Krishna Das chants the Hanuman Chalisa. Hanuman is considered to live eternally. He is the monkey God, strong, full of courage, with various skills and powers. He lived his life to serve Lord Rama with utmost humility and devotion. According to the tradition, reciting the Hanuman Chalisa for 40 days will bring health, wealth, happiness, courage and wisdom.

Mala Beads are a Buddhist tool of meditation. They are moved in rhythm with the breath and mantra of the meditation. The action of moving the beads keeps sleep and distraction at bay and incorporates more of the whole body in the meditation. Each time the mantra is repeated, the fingers move to the next bead. The mala is meant to focus the mind and promote clear thought about the meaning of the mantra as it is chanted.

Crystal Singing Bowl

I got one of these bowls. The sound is amazing. These beautiful and luminescent bowls emit an expansive sound that fills whatever space it is in. Evocative of ancient temples, the Classic Frosted Bowls sound is a combination of bell, gong and "voice". The effects of playing Classic Frosted Bowls in the home, office or a large group setting can help promote a stable, peaceful energy.

Peaceful Warrior

The story is about a young gymnast Dan Millman played by Scott Mechlowicz, and his struggle to make sense of his life in which he is successful but still unfulfilled. By chance he meets a "Zen Master" who helps him get his head straight" after which he goes on to be comfortable with his athletic prowess albeit not exactly Olympic caliber. There is a lot of jumping around scene wise during which we don't know what is dream (part of getting his head straight) or reality showing his maturing personality. He suffers a terrible physical injury which forces him to work very hard to get back where he was ability wise earlier, but much wiser for successfully negotiating his transformation to wise old Grasshopper. This is a great inspirational movie.
